Below are the scientific observations and video from an experiment conducted on acids and bases…
“pH is the measurement of how acidic or basic a substance is. The pH
scale goes from 0-14. If a substance’s pH level is from 0-6, the substance is an acid. If a
substance’s pH level is from 8-14, the substance is a base and a pH level of 7 is
neutral. When you mix acids with bases, their effects can neutralize. In this experiment,
I used my knowledge of acids and bases to create chemical reactions the neutralize their effects.
Analysis: I learned from the experiment that when you mix acids with bases, their
unique effects neutralize. This can be in the form of a chemical reaction like what
happened in the experiment. Also, a gas can be released when acids and bases mix like carbon dioxide.
Results: As stated before, baking soda and vinegar made the biggest balloon while
cranberry juice and baking soda made the smallest balloon. This is because vinegar
and baking soda are very far apart on the pH scale, and acids and bases that are far
apart on the pH scale have bigger reactions than ones that are close together. Although
cranberry juice has about the same pH level as vinegar, it’s heavily diluted so that
people can drink it unlike vinegar, that’s why vinegar made the biggest reaction out of all the acids used.
